About Schizophrenia

Schizophrenia is a term used to describe a condition which results in major disturbances in the individual’s perceptions, thoughts and feelings. The individual who is experiencing schizophrenia will start to view the world quite differently and their behaviour may change and appear odd or bizarre to others.

Every person’s experience will be unique and the actual range of symptoms is so wide that the term ‘schizophrenia’ may well be used to cover different conditions.

Although everyone’s experience of schizophrenia is unique the person may have disordered perceptions and their thoughts may appear to be jumbled up or confused. The individual may also have auditory hallucinations whereby he or she hears voices which no one else can hear. They may also experience delusions which could be paranoid. Often, the person may behave in a way which is uncharacteristic or unusual.

It is important for people with one of these conditions to know that they are not the only ones who suffer with it: self-help groups are very beneficial, especially in sharing experiences of how to manage hallucinations. As with other conditions, medication can be helpful in managing symptoms.
