Getting it right for every child is a programme that aims to improve outcomes for all children and young people.
It promotes a shared approach that:
builds solutions with and around children and families
enables children to get the help they need when they need it
supports a positive shift in culture, systems and practice
involves working together to make things better
Getting it right for every child is the foundation for work with all children and young people, including adult services where parents are involved. It builds on universal health and education services, and is embedded in the developing early years and youth frameworks. Developments in the universal services of health and education, such as Better Health Better Care and Curriculum for Excellence, are identifying what needs to be done in those particular areas to improve outcomes for children.

The Samaritans are conducting an evaluation of their emotional support services, and are encouraging anyone that may have used the services to complete their survey (link below).
‘The aim of the study is to evaluate the usage and impact of the Samaritans confidential helpline, e-mail and SMS emotional support services. We want to analyse the impact of what we do, and find out what is the most effective way we can offer emotional support to our callers. The findings from the evaluation will further establish best practice in this area, inform service development and subsequently help us to provide more effective support services’.

Our Open Day was a huge success with over seventy people attending.
There were a large number of young people who were visiting the Project for the first time, and a special mention goes to some of the young people from Inverkeithing High School.
The day consisted of a presentation of the year’s events by Amber the Project Manager, followed by an interesting presentation by Penumbra's Chief Executive, Nigel Henderson on the work of Penumbra across Scotland and news about a new database and tool for measuring outcomes for service users. It is envisaged this will help both people who use our services and workers to map out their personal recovery journey.
The remainder of the afternoon was set-aside for young people and staff from agencies to see how the drop-in operates on a day-to-day basis. Staff interacted with young people who enjoyed the many activities that were provided.

Penumbra started running our own SVQ level 3 in Health and Social care in Dunfermline In May 2007. This is the main qualification for support workers to gain to register with the care council.
Morag Rae was amongst the August intake and has now qualified. She was the first of 3 Edinburgh candidates to achieve this qualification.
Many Congratulations to Morag, who is Penumbra’s first in house qualified SVQ candidate.

Sylvia moved into Penumbra’s Glen Road development over 8 years ago and we continued to support her when she moved into her own flat last year.
She became ill recently and unexpectedly having been diagnosed with multiple cancers and given a prognosis of 6 months. Actor Dean Park was her idol and she has seen him in many shows, she had tickets to go and see him in Glasgow but was unable to attend due to her illness.
Support Manager Moira Sharp emailed Dean’s personal assistant to see if he could send her a signed photo (which he did) ,
“the next thing I knew he was on the phone arranging to visit Sylvia in hospital, by the pic’s you will see he did, I have never seen Sylvia so happy for weeks she was delighted”.
Sylvia passed away this week. She was a very brave lady, well loved by the staff at Wishaw and will be greatly missed.

The Gorgie project was opened at the end of last year by the Lord Provost of Edinburgh (pictured) to provide clients their own tenancies with visiting support.
The project got off to a fantastic start. All of the 15 flats are now occupied and already the service users are taking control of their lives and reducing the amount of support they receive.
