Aberdeen mental health service receives top marks… for the fourth time in a row

An Aberdeen mental health service has been awarded top marks by the Care Inspectorate, for the fourth time in a row.

Run by the mental health charity Penumbra, Papermill Gardens Supported Living Service has been recognised for its excellent staff and for the high quality care and support it provides. The latest inspection means the services is one of the best rated in Aberdeen.

Situated in a quiet residential area in the north of the city, Papermill Gardens promotes independent living for people experiencing mental health difficulties. The purpose built complex is made up of 11 spacious and modern flats, with individual tenancies provided through the Langstane Housing Association.

Registered for both Housing Support and Care at Home, the service provides high quality recovery focused support 24/7 to people in their own homes. This includes practical support around maintaining a home, social support to encourage people to access local resources, and emotional support.

The Care Inspectorate made an unannounced visit to the service last month and published its report earlier this week. It rated the staffing and care and support provided as ‘excellent’, the highest grade possible. The report said:

“The service provides support to service users with an emphasis on using recovery based methods of support. While service users are supported they are also encouraged to take responsibility for their own support and direct how they would wish this to be provided.

“This service continues to operate to a high standard. The manager is committed to continue to look at best practice in the field of mental health and to assess what can be used within Papermill Gardens.”

Inspectors even took the unusual step of making no recommendations for improvements as part of the review.

Penumbra operates seven services in Aberdeen which have been inspected. Six are now rated ‘excellent’ and one is rated ‘very good’ by the Care Inspectorate.

Speaking about the report, Penumbra Service Manager Kenny Thom said:

“This fantastic report is testament to the effort and dedication shown by all the staff at the service. They work really hard to build good working partnerships with the people we support and to help them achieve recovery. A massive well done to everyone involved!”

Penumbra’s Papermill Gardens Supported Living Service, Ellon Road Short Break Service, Aberdeen Mental Health Service, Aberdeen Nova Service and Rosemount Terrace Support Accommodation Service have also received ‘excellent’ grades.
