Frequently Asked Questions

Can you help with medication?
Yes. We are happy to support guests who are not used to managing their own medication. Guests should bring enough medication for the length of their stay. To ensure the safety of guests, all medication managed by us must be in its original packaging, and we need a letter from the prescribing GP or Psychiatrist detailing each medication, the dosage and the times of day it is taken. We cannot provide nursing care.

Does the cost of the week include outings and activities?
No. The cost of the week provides accommodation, towels and bed linen, meals, laundry, and support from project workers. Guests are asked to bring their own spending money. As a guideline we suggest between £10 and £20 a day, though if guests have a specific idea of something they would like to do they should take this into account.

Can guests bring a pet?
No. Unfortunately we are not able to accommodate animals, other than registered Guide Dogs, out of respect for the wishes of other guests.

Is smoking allowed?
In line with the Smoking, Health and Social Care (Scotland) Act 2005, the communal areas of Cairdeas House are smoke free. At present guests are free to smoke in their own bedroom. In the longer term we hope to provide a smoking lounge, but this is not currently available.

How will I find Cairdeas House?
There is a map and directions for reaching Cairdeas House by train, bus, and car on this website in the section entitled “Getting to Cairdeas House”. If you have any concerns about finding your way to the house, staff are happy to meet guests at Haymarket railway station. The best time to arrange this is when the booking form is sent in.

How much do guests have to pay?
Most guests’ breaks are paid for, at least in part, through their local social work department. Most people also have to contribute something themselves – this is called the “personal contribution”. Each local authority decides how much people in their area have to pay towards their stay and any guest who is uncertain of this should talk to their social worker.

Do you take children?
No. We are registered with the Care Commission to provide residential care for adults and it is not, therefore, possible for guests to bring children.

Is there an age limit?
Guests must be over 18 years of age. There is no upper age limit, but guests must be able to manage stairs as, due to the limitations of the style of the house, all of our bedrooms and bathrooms are accessed via stairs.

Will I have to share a room?
No. We have 5 single bedded and 3 twin bedded rooms, but no-one is required to share a room unless they request to do so. The twin bedded rooms are sometimes used when friends are staying at the same time, or when a guest chooses to bring their carer or partner.

Can a guest visit before they come to stay?
Yes. We are happy to arrange visits so that guests who are booked to stay with us can see what the house is like before their break. Visits enable us to answer any specific concerns guests or carers have about the stay and are often helpful in reducing the understandable stress of the unknown.

Do guests have to stay for a whole week?
No. The majority of our guests come for a week running Monday to Monday, but we can arrange longer stays of up to three weeks, and shorter stays for example a weekend or part week. Short stays are charged at different rates, so please call us to check prices.

Is the house always staffed?
At least one member of the support staff is in the house at all times, and a staff member sleeps in the house overnight in case of need.
