Respite care is a short supported break which allows people to escape the pressures of ongoing ill health, difficult living routines or the caring relationship. We aim to help people return to the community more able to cope with the stresses of every day life.
Traditionally, respite has been seen as providing a break for a carer of someone with high dependency needs. At Cairdeas House we seek to provide a definition of respite more suited to those with mental health problems, one that focuses on providing a positive experience for the individual.
Situations where respite helps
- stressful life events eg bereavement, separation
- as a break from social isolation or the stresses of daily life
- to avoid admission to a psychiatric hospital
- as a break from other tenants in supported accommodation
- to enhance quality of life eg when there are no other opportunities for a break or holiday
- planned and emergency breaks for carers
- when people become physically run down eg not sleeping or eating properly
- where regular respite is built into care packages
