About the Service

The Edinburgh Self Harm Project is now part of the ‘THRIVE’ initiative as Trauma Informed
Self-Harm Support Service. Please note that the team does not operate an out of hours service.

We are part of the Connect Partnership, along with Heath in Mind and Support in Mind. The Connect
Partnership represents a unique collaboration between leading 3rd sector providers. Underpinned by
our shared commitment to the Thrive values, we will deliver a multi-disciplinary and multi-agency
response so people receive the right help at the right time. We provide services focused on
self-harm and suicide ideation within our locality-based team. We work in Edinburgh with people
over the age of 16. Currently we are structuring our referral route, however we are taking
referrals on an individual basis. If you wish to refer to our or enquiry about our service options

Service Options

1:1 Support

1:1 trauma-informed therapeutic support sessions (1hr/week) up to 12 weeks.  Currently provided via phone or video call. We also have in person options based on individuals needs and Scottish Government guidance on Covid-19. If you wish to refer someone or self-refer, our referral forms are available upon request from Localityteam.edinburgh@penumbra.org.uk

Parents and Carers Support 

One-off information and support session for family, carers and friends in contact with people who self harm. Currently provided via telephone and video call. Enquire at Localityteam.edinburgh@penumbra.org.uk

Understanding Self-Harm and Awareness Raising 

These 1.5-2hr sessions are aimed at professionals and volunteers who work with people who self-harm. The sessions tackle self-harm misconceptions, defines self-harm, looks at who self-harms and why, provides guidance on how best to support someone who self-harms, and includes information about tools and techniques that can be used when supporting someone who self-harms.

Full Day Training – Working with Self-Harm

The full day training is aimed at professionals and volunteers who work with people who self harm. It expands on all aspects of awareness raising session by using case studies and drawing on interactive resources. Training will include CPD certificates. Currently delivered online. Workshops and Groups

One-off workshops or short term (4-6 weeks) closed groups focused on specific themes as per need. Workshops and groups will be focused on psycho-education, tools and sharing experiences. These will be available to all and are being currently delivered online.  Some of the options will be delivered collaboratively with the Connect Partners. Some of the options include:

  • Expressing emotions in art: this will explore how to use art to express our emotions. It looks on tips on how to use art to express emotion, and there will be opportunities to share created art at the end of the sessions.  No experience required and art materials will be provided.
  • Managing Anger: tools and techniques to manage anger.
  • Managing Difficult Emotions: this will cover difficult emotions, why they are important, even if they are uncomfortable to experience. It will explore ways we can manage these difficult emotions when they arise, with the aim to reach a place where they are not as overwhelming.
  • Understanding and Building Self-Esteem: will cover how self-esteem develops, the cycle of low self-esteem, how to break the cycle of low self-esteem, tools and techniques to help build self-esteem and what healthy self-esteem looks like. There will be worksheets and group discussion to explore the topic, and introduce tools to use in everyday life.

Skin Camouflage Clinic

Skim was originally Formed in partnership with Changing Faces: the UK charity that supports,
represents and campaigns for people who have disfigurements of the face or body. Currently,
Penumbra’s Camouflage Clinic is a stand alone service offering support to people seeking to mask
scars or other marks caused by self-harming.

Currently unavailable due to lockdown restrictions. We will offer the service again when it is safe
to do so.
