fit150 aims to support people to be active for 150 minutes each week. There are plenty of ways to achieve 150 minutes of physical activity. From exercises you can do in the comfort of your own home to easy ways you can be more active and feel healthier in everyday life. Staff at one of our services have shared with us some creative ways of how staff and residents are achieving their fit150 goals:
Here at Downfield Place, we currently provide accommodation to four individuals. Support staff are available 24 hours, 7 days a week. Over the past twelve months staff and residents have focussed on hitting their fit150 goals as much as possible. Staff have encouraged and motivated residents and each other to take part in various activities in and outside the house. We have:
started a relaxation group: This group takes place every Thursday morning in the residents’ own front lounge. It involves deep breathing, mindfulness techniques and gentle yoga moves. (If you are keen to try yoga yourself, you can find a video here)
started “Get up and Go!”: This group also takes place in the residents’ house but is a little more energetic. Residents follow a work out DVD which guides them to use their hula hoops and fitness pedals.
been swimming and at the gym: Staff have supported a couple of the residents to regularly attend the local swimming centre and gym. Both are making fantastic progress and are now able to swim up to 30 lengths! Staff and supported people also have access to the Edinburgh leisure cards which means that these facilities can be accessed for little cost.
done some gardening: The residents have been working hard on their garden and there have been various pots planted and ornamental decorations made. One resident in particular has spent several hours over the last month tending the garden. Everyone has found the fresh air and gentle exercise good for both body and mind!
