Nikki’s Smart Goal September

This week, Nikki Kilburn (Learning and Development Manager) reflects on her SMART goal September experience.

 

My SMART goal for September was to attend a hip hop dance class once a week for the month of September. My outcome for my goal was consistency. I chose consistency because sometimes I can struggle with keeping a routine. This is generally because I travel around the country with work and also because life can get in the way of the best intentions.

It had been a while since I had been to a dance class and I was feeling a bit nervous. I had visions of not being able to keep up with the choreography and, to be honest, the first week was a bit of a mind bender. I was quite discombobulated with all the instructions and then having to remember and repeat with the group while the instructor watched. It was quite full-on. I did enjoy myself though and was glad I had made it through week one. The next week was great; I was buzzing off the momentum of week one and was pleased I made less mistakes and managed to keep up.

The following week was a bit of a challenge though as I didn’t get in from work until 7.30pm. I had left the house at 6.45am and I was exhausted. All I wanted to do was curl up on the sofa and watch TV. So, that is what I did. I wanted to maintain the consistency and so I found a dance fitness class I could attend later in the week. This allowed me to chill out and afforded me some flexibility.

I was glad I hadn’t focused on the goal of going to the same class every week because I would have probably ended up feeling under pressure to go or not gone and felt bad. The last couple of weeks were easy as I was able to go to the dance fitness class one week and the hip hop class the other week.

All in all it was a good commitment to make. I’m going to keep going to the hip hop class when I can and when I can’t I will either have a bop about the kitchen or find an alternative that could well be on the dance floor on a Saturday night.
