Penumbra provides a range of person centred support services for people with mental-health problems across Scotland in addition to providing training and consultancy on issues relating to mental health
Since 1994, Penumbra has pioneered a community based mental health project for 16-21 year olds which has demonstrated positive outcomes with young people who have a range of difficulties related to their mental health.
For some time now, Penumbra has been one of main organisations in Scotland working in the field of self-harm, particularly in the 16-25 year old age-group. Between 30-50% of young people we work with have experienced, or are experiencing, self-harm to some degree. We have organised several conferences on the subject and in January 1991 published a report on a piece of research we did in Edinburgh with young people who self-harm called “No Harm in Listening”.
The self-harm training we provide can be geared and adapted to suit the needs of particular groups but areas covered could include:
- What is self-harming?
- Why do people do it?
- What do young people who self-harm have to say about it?
- What are their needs?
- What issues does self-harming raise for workers and agencies?
- Reviewing own practice, skills.
- Exploring alternatives, looking at ways of working with young people who self-harm.
- Exploring the relationship between suicide and self-harm.
- Risk assessment and self-harm.
- Further training/information needs.
