This Early Response Service (funded by Choose Life) was launched in early 2005 and has been going from strength to strength ever since. Sophie Gwyther is Project Co-ordinator and has recently been joined by Clare Swales as a part-time Administrator. The Project is based in Kirkcaldy and provides a Fife-wide service. Staff will endeavour to meet you as close to your home as possible.
Area Served (geographical and population)
The Project focuses on the support needs of people over 18 who live in the Fife area. For young people who need support between 12-18 contact Fife Youth Project.
Type of Project
The Project provides support to people who have been involved in a recent self-harm incident based on a prompt telephone response.
Project Aims
The aim of the Project is to set up and manage the development of an early response service to people aged 18+ who have been involved in a recent self-harm incident. This is based on prompt telephone communication and contact within 72 hours of the incident.
The aim is then to work with people to establish and understand their support needs and link them with appropriate existing services in the area. This is also an opportunity to gather information on the needs of this group to inform further planning in this field and to advise and liaise with other interested agencies.
What We do
- Contact within 72 hours of referral - to access the service you can self-refer or be referred by another agency.
- 1:1 sessions offering informal person centred support in a safe, non-judgemental environment. The Project staff are trained in Solution Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and use these techniques during 1:1 sessions if appropriate. For more information on SFBT go to www.brieftherapy.org.uk.
- Information and advice on existing support services in Fife.
- Resource Base provides access to a wide range of self-help materials, training packs, videos and books on self-harm. This is aimed at friends, families and carers involved with someone who is self harming, professionals who would like to increase their understanding or use training materials and people who are self harming who would like to use self-help materials or have a chat with a worker. To make an appointment, please contact Sophie Gwyther.
How do I refer?
Referrals can be made by phone or in writing by the person themselves or by someone on their behalf. Please contact the Project for a referral form.

Project Aims
Provide a service with which young people who self-harm will engage to help them explore issues around their self-harm thereby reducing their higher risk of suicide. The project is committed to recognising that young people are the experts in their own lives.
Project Objectives

- Explore the needs of parents/carers and professionals in relation to self-harm.
- Liaise with agencies working with groups particularly affected i.e Looked After, Homeless, LGBT etc.

What We Do
- 1:1 Support
- Drop-in sessions
- Groupwork
- Develop training on self-harm for a range of agencies
- Liaison with agencies in contact with young people to identify and respond to particularly "at risk" groups
The Project works alongside a range of agencies working with young people to help young people address the underlying issues which lead them to self-harm and ultimately reduce the suicide risk among this group. This includes helping young people and agencies identify the most appropriate type of support and signpost people in these directions.
How do I refer?
We accept self referrals and referrals from any agency, preferably those in contact with homeless young people and looked after children and young people.
