Scottish Self-Harm Forum

Penumbra has recently reconvened the Scottish Self-Harm Forum which is a coming together of people with an interest in self-harm around issues of interest. The original Forum has been around for many years but had not met for some time.

Penumbra has agreed to host meetings and provide secretarial support to it for the immediate future. Two meetings have taken place in September and December and both were well attended. Issues identified for future discussion include:

  • Awareness Raising
  • Training
  • Information Gathering
  • Identifying needs of young people
  • Prisons
  • Evidence/Research
  • Involving young people
  • National Inquiry
  • SH Policies and Good Practice
  • Definitions and terminology
  • Suicide and SH
  • A & E responses
  • Conferences
  • NICE Guidelines
  • Housing
  • Gender and age issues

We agreed to look to organise local Forum meetings at regional venues throughout Scotland in the coming months. Suggested places were:

  • Glasgow
  • North Ayrshire
  • Fife
  • West Lothian
  • Aberdeen
  • Inverness
  • Dundee
  • Perth

Following these meetings a small group will meet to draft recommendations on how the work of the Forum can best be taken forward. In the meantime a form is being sent out to interested people to gather information on local involvement in this field and the assessing areas of interest. A Network Group to examine BME issues is currently being hosted by the Scottish Development Centre for Mental Health- contact Gail Cunningham for details.
