Young People and Self-Harm

For a number of years, Penumbra has been one of the main organisations in Scotland working in the field of self-harm, particularly in the 16-25 year old age group. Between 30-50% of young people we work with have experienced, or are experiencing, self-harm to some degree. We have organised several conferences on the subject and in January 2001 published a report on a piece of research we did in Edinburgh with young people who self-harm called “No Harm in Listening” (available from Penumbra H.Q). Click here to read about the main findings of the research. In January 2007 we appointed a Self-Harm Services Co-ordinator, Maria Naranjo who is responsible for developing and building Penumbra's current self-harm work as well as promoting good practice and service development across Scotland. Maria also promotes young people's involvement in all aspects of self-harm work and influences future policy discussions.

Penumbra believes that young people are experts of their own lives and experiences and it is only by involving them can we provide the type of help they require. We have now gone on to develop a number of projects specifically focussing on self-harm which aim to bring together young people, carers and families, and professionals to jointly improve services for this group of young people.

Penumbra is taking part in a research study on the links between self-harm and suicide in young people. Although we know that self-harm and suicide are not the same thing, self-harm continues to be one of the main risk factors for suicide. This research will explore why self-harm becomes suicidal, by getting information about the views and experiences of young people who self-harm and who have attempted suicide on one or more occasions. The study is funded by the Scottish Executive "National Programme in Improving Mental Health and Well-being", and will be carried out by Dawn Griesbach, an independent researcher.
