People in Elgin who are concerned about their mental health are being urged to contact a new service which launches today (Wednesday 26 April 2017).
The new Moray Mental Health and Wellness Centre can be used to access a range of adult services designed to promote positive mental health and support people to recover from mental ill health.
The new manager of the service Debs Cruden said:
“We are really excited to be launching the new service. Since January we’ve been busy recruiting and training the new team and making sure we have everything we need in place.
“It is important to look after your mental health and I would encourage everyone in Elgin who wants advice or support to get in touch with us.
“Everything we do is guided by a belief that people can and do recover from even the most serious mental health problems. Our team of Recovery and Peer Practitioners are experienced and compassionate and will work alongside you to help you cope with any difficulties you have. They will treat you as a unique individual and provide support based around your needs.”
A wide range of advice and support is available through the new Centre. This includes guidance on mental health self-management, one-to-one and group support, and a dedicated 1st Response service for people experiencing distress. The Centre will also support people to access advice about other areas which can impact on mental health, such as benefits, housing, and education.
Peer workers with knowledge of managing mental health problems will also be based at the service to offer insight and guidance from their own experience.
Moray Health and Social Care Partnership announced in January that the new service would be run as a partnership between two Scottish charities – Penumbra and Community Renewal.
Through the partnership Penumbra will deliver community-based mental health services, whilst Community Renewal will provide Link Workers in local GP practices to offer mental health information and signposting to people visiting their doctor.
People seeking advice and support can call or email the service, or visit its newly opened office base at 30-32 Batchen Street in Elgin town centre.
The Centre can be contacted on 01343 556191 (general number) and 0844 6251625 (1st Response service for people in distress) or by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
The Centre will initially provide a service for Elgin residents before service provision is expanded to include all of Moray in April 2018.
